Adult Swim delivered a doozy of a finale on Sunday with a two-episode end to Season 5 of Rick and Morty. Officially marking the halfway point of the ten-season series, the episodes were sure to wow audiences. Still, Dan Harmon (Community) and Justin Roiland (Solar Opposites) managed to outdo themselves once again.
After a double dose of live-action promos featuring Back to the Future superstar Christopher Lloyd portraying Rick Sanchez - the character based on his rendition of Doc Brown - it was obvious that there was something special to look forward to, and the episode definitely did not disappoint.
Amongst a bevy of non-stop madness, there is an incredible easter egg paying homage to the great Stan Lee. Poking fun at how Stan "The Man" Lee used to leave notes at the bottom of a comic page telling readers what issues to return to for more context about references made in dialogue, Rick and Morty did the same thing.
As you can see in the video above, a Stan Lee version of Rick Sanchez pops up and explains which season and episode are being referenced by saying, "Check out Season 1 Episode 9 Rick-heads!" The hilariously heartwarming reference goes even further as the character belts out Stan's famous catchphrase - Excelsior! - complete with a Rick-worthy belch mid-speak.
Do you guys dig this Stan Lee reference/easter egg/cameo, or whatever else you want to call it? We will have a spoiler-filled breakdown for the two-episode finale for you soon, but in the meantime, you can view our exclusive chat with Summer Smith voice actress Spencer Grammer below!
Spencer Grammer is in the house! The actress and voice performer behind Rick & Morty's Summer Smith stops by the show to talk about the character now that she's voiced her for a decade! We dig deep into Summer's character arc and how a mixture of her own personality and the writing helped lend to that growth.
Discussing which characters she'd like to see re-visit the show, we shared plenty of laughs about Bucket Head, Snowball, Summer's ex, and more. We joke about a potential crossover where she finds her ex-boyfriend in the Solar Opposites wall and what dimension Summer would choose to visit with Rick's portal gun - The Neverending Story.
Talk turns to her father, Frasier and X-Men star Kelsey Grammer, and we discuss why he doesn't watch Rick and Morty, and we even cook up a jestful scheme that would see the actor play Summer's father from a different dimension, as Frasier. Spencer shares tidbits about her decade of experience with the show and makes it clear that she has no plans to leave the character of Summer behind, as well as talking to us about a few of her other projects.
Rick and Morty Season 5 is now available to stream on the Adult Swim app.
