Netflix has set January 19th, 2027 as the premiere date for Blue Eye Samurai Season 2. The six new episodes pick up with Mizu sailing to London to find the last two men who might be her father, more than three years after Season 1 premiered in November 2023. Check out the official teaser and post down below:

Blue Eye Samurai was created and written by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, with Jane Wu as supervising director and French studio Blue Spirit handling the animation. Season 1 won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in 2024, and Netflix has already renewed the series for a third and final season that will end the story in 2028.

Who Is Mizu?

Maya Erskine voices Mizu, a mixed-race swordmaster in Japan during the Edo period, when the Tokugawa shogunate had closed the country to outsiders. Her blue eyes made her a target from childhood, and the woman she grew up believing was her mother had her dress as a boy to keep her hidden. As an adult, Mizu still passes as a man while she hunts four white men who stayed in Japan illegally. One of them is her father, and she plans to kill all four.

Mizu was raised as a sword apprentice by Master Eiji (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), a blind swordsmith who taught her to forge and fight. Her sword was made from the glowing blue metal of a meteorite the two of them recovered together.

Episodes 1 And 2: Shindo And The Four Fangs

In Hammerscale, Mizu forces a flesh-trader carrying a Western pistol to name his weapons dealer, Heiji Shindo (Randall Park). Ringo (Masi Oka), a cheerful kitchen attendant born without hands, begs to become her apprentice and later learns she is a woman. Mizu defeats the students of the Shindo Dojo and its champion, Taigen (Darren Barnet), who bullied her when they were children. Losing the duel costs Taigen his engagement to Princess Akemi (Brenda Song), the daughter of Lord Daichi.

In An Unexpected Element, Shindo and the Irish arms dealer Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh) send the Four Fangs to kill Mizu. Their leader is Chiaki (Mark Dacascos), an assassin who once tricked Eiji and Mizu into forging him a sword. Mizu kills all four of them but is badly wounded. Meanwhile, Daichi arranges for Akemi to marry the shogun's son, so she runs away to find Taigen, and her tutor Seki (George Takei) goes with her.

Episodes 3 To 5: The Brothel And Mikio

In A Fixed Number of Paths, Shindo offers Mizu a deal at a tea ceremony, and she answers by cutting off his arm. Taigen is captured and taken to Fowler's island castle. In Peculiarities, Mizu goes to Madame Kaji's brothel to learn how women are smuggled into the castle, and Akemi ends up working there while trying to catch Mizu.

The Tale of the Ronin and the Bride was the episode submitted for the series' Emmy win, and Amber Noizumi's script for it also won the Annie Award for writing. Mizu fights off the Thousand Claws gang to protect the women of the brothel, while flashbacks show her marriage to Mikio (Byron Mann), a disgraced samurai who turns on her once he sees how violent she is. Mikio kills Mizu's mother, and Mizu kills him. In the present, Mizu refuses to help when Daichi's men take Akemi home, and Ringo leaves her.

Episodes 6 To 8: Fowler's Castle And The Great Fire

In All Evil Dreams and Angry Words, Mizu sneaks into Fowler's castle through a tunnel and fights her way up to free Taigen. She learns that Fowler and Shindo plan to kill the shogun and his family with Fowler's guns. Fowler shoots her and breaks her sword, and she jumps into the sea with Taigen. Netflix later released a black-and-white special edition of the episode on YouTube.

In Nothing Broken, Ringo brings Mizu and Taigen back to Eiji's hut, and Mizu works out how to remake her sword's steel. Akemi, now married to the shogun's second son, Takayoshi (Harry Shum Jr.), learns of Fowler's plan and finds out that her own father is part of the conspiracy.

In The Great Fire of 1657, Fowler's army attacks the castle in Edo. Fowler kills the shogun, Taigen kills Shindo, and Mizu stops Fowler, but the fire she starts spreads across the city. Fowler tells her the remaining two men, Skeffington and Routely, are in London, and that the woman who raised her was a maid paid to care for her. Seki is shot and killed, Akemi chooses to stay in Edo with the shogun's surviving family, and Ringo returns to Eiji believing Mizu died. Mizu sets sail for London with Fowler as her prisoner.

What Happens In Season 2

Season 2 is set in London in 1657. "London in 1657 had a thriving culture of illicit activity, something that fittingly parallels our story of Japan," Noizumi and Green told Netflix. "Mizu will have to navigate this dark underbelly amid a puritanical society that persecuted women as witches, closed bars and theaters, and even outlawed Christmas."

Back in Japan, Akemi and Taigen deal with a dangerous new shogun in Edo Castle, while Ringo looks for a new purpose. Erskine, Song, Barnet and Oka return, and Jonathan Pryce joins the cast as Old Violet, with Joel Kim Booster as Priest Ando and Sherry Cola as Kuma. Season 2 was first expected in 2026 before Netflix moved it to January 2027.
