Recently, there have been a lot of conflicting rumours about what's happening with What If...? season 2. While it's expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2023 (merchandise for the show is already finding its way into stores), we've recently heard it could be pushed back into next year.
That would be a major disappointment for fans of the animated MCU series, and we're sad to say we have another disappointing update today.
What If...?'s official landing page on Disney+ once listed the show as coming in "Early 2023," but that's now been changed to "Coming Soon." Not only does this confirm the show's return is no longer imminent, but it may also confirm recent reports that it won't be released until the first quarter of 2024.
The reason for the delay is unclear, but Marvel Studios is new to animation and could be struggling with getting it finished in time. Then again, there's always the possibility that there are creative issues with the show; while the first season received positive reviews, later episodes struggled to live up to early efforts revolving around Captain Carter and T'Challa Star-Lord.
Season 2 is expected to bring Carter back for a new spin on the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, while we'll also see characters like Red Guardian and Hela. One episode is even expected to be based on the comic book 1602.
With Marvel Studios exploring the Multiverse in this current Saga of storytelling, you'd think as much What If...? as possible would be a priority for Kevin Feige and company. Instead, scooper Daniel Richtman recently claimed the current plan is for the show to end with season 3.
A Marvel Zombies animated TV series is also in the works, spinning out of the events of that memorable season 1 episode, so there are lots of animated MCU offerings to get excited about. X-Men '97 and Spider-Man: Freshman Year are also on the horizon, though there have been reports of issues behind the scenes.
Stay tuned for updates.
