An incredibly ambitious animated project is set to hit Netflix in just one week. After a successful screening event this weekend, We The People will be available on the streaming service on Sunday, which also happens to be Independence Day.
The project is important for many reasons and has many recognizable names behind it. Possibly the most influential are producers Barack and Michelle Obama, who aim to teach civics through music with the new series, hoping the animated style will help open to a wider audience and demographic.
Beyond the Obamas, however, the series is directed by the incredibly talented Peter Ramsey, best known for Into The Spider-Verse. He was the first African American to be nominated and win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Following his work on Rise of the Guardians and Into the Spider-Verse, Ramsey has now lent his directing talents to We The People - at least until Into the Spider-Verse 2 releases.
That's plenty of star power alone, but the musical talent that drives the series is also exceptional. Adam Lambert, Janelle Monet, Lin-Manuel Miranda, KYLE, H.E.R., Brandy Carlile, and more artists add their musical flair to the project.
Check out the trailer for We The People below.
This series of ten animated music videos brings musicians and directors together to remix civics for a new generation. Learn the basics of rights and citizenship with upbeat songs by popular artists like Janelle Monáe, H.E.R., Adam Lambert, Brandi Carlile, and more.
Those who dig the trailer for We The People can hear us chat with the director, Peter Ramsey, who helmed Into the Spider-Verse below! Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot!
Any Spidey fans out there?
It's an honor to share my chat with Peter Ramsey, the first African American to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, which he nabbed for 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
He directed Spider-Verse following his directorial debut for Rise of the Guardians, which was a major flop. We discuss his Faceplant episode, which explores situations where people get back up from failure, just like the lesson taught in Spider-Verse.
We also chat about Stan Lee's cameo and how that was recorded, things that were meant for the film that didn't end up making the final cut, involving the live-action actors in the future, and much, much more!
We The People will begin streaming on Netflix on Independence Day - July 4th, 2021.
