Two new anime series inspired by Ubisoft's Far Cry video game franchise are coming to Netflix.
The first is just a general Far Cry adult anime series which will be based on the first-person shooter franchise of the same name. In the video game franchise, each game usually takes us to a different part of the world where players typically take on some sort of dictator or evil leader.
The Far Cry franchise launched with the release of the first game in 2004. There have since between five game releases in the main series (a sixth is on the way) along with multiple spinoffs. Far Cry 6, which is due out this October, takes us to the fictional island of Yara (loosely based on modern day Cuba) where players will attempt to start a revolution against the fascist dicator Anton Castillo (brought to life by Giancarlo Esposito). The Far Cry anime series is still early in production with the creative team still being assembled; however, it will be produced by Ubisoft's Hélène Juguet, Hugo Revon, and Gérard Guillemot.
A second series, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, was also announced. This anime series is actually based on the Far Cry 3 expansion, Blood Dragon, which featured a story, characters, and visual style inspired by 80's action movies.
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is an original anime "featuring alter egos of Ubisoft characters in a highly referenced homage to the early '90s." The series is created and executive produced by Adi Shankar (Castlevania) with Juguet, Revon, and Guillemot also producing.
Animation is being done by Bobbypills. "We’ve blended a plethora of art styles to deliver a visually distinct nostalgic acid trip," said Shankar. "Mehdi Leffad is our series director. Artist "Balak" is the creative director of Bobby Pills also overseeing this production."
According to Variety, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix has been given a six episode order.
