We've known for a while now that Warner Bros. was working on an animated Scooby-Doo movie, but it's been quite some time since we've last had an update on it. Well, according to Variety, the currently untitled film is "full steam ahead" and on track for a theatrical release in the first quarter of 2020.
Furthermore, the studio has reportedly brought on Chris Columbus as creative producer for the upcoming movie. He will work alongside director Tony Cervone with a screenplay fro Kelly Fremon Craig.
Columbus, who has an "affection" for Scooby-Doo, is said to have developed an interest in working on the film while producing the Gremlins reboot. The filmmaker will make quite an addition to the team. He boasts an incredible resume as both director ( Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) and producer (Harry Potter franchise, Night at the Museum).
Not much is known about the animated Scooby-Doo movie, but the Hanna-Barbera animated series follows four teenagers - Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers - along with the Great Dane named Scooby-Doo, as they work to solve strange and spooky mysteries involving "supernatural creatures." More often than not, these mysteries turned out to be a hoax meant to frighten the locals so that they don't discover or interfere with the villain's main criminal activity.
Warner Bros.' Scooby-Doo film will probably be some variation of this. With a release window of early 2020, we should hopefully hear more about the upcoming animated movie in the coming months.
