A new TV spot for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been released, and it sees Charlie Day's Luigi finally utter his iconic catchphrase.
That comes when he inadvertently defeats one of his pursuers, and Day definitely sounds like a good fit for Mario's brother.
Does the character seem a tad cowardly to you? Well, there's a good reason for that. Co-director Aaron Horvath recently revealed, "The story of Mario saving the princess was too straightforward for the film...[Luigi] takes the Princess Peach role in our story."
"It's Mario's goal to save his brother from Bowser's clutches," The Super Mario Bros. Movie helmer continued. "He has to go on this epic adventure to do that. Luigi - who's a famously nervous, anxious character - finds himself in the worst possible predicament: having to survive interrogations with Bowser, and make it through that gauntlet."
Yes, Luigi is the movie's damsel in distress, and while that's upset some fans, Horvath's justification adds up. We're sure he'll get his chance to shine, but for the most, it's looking like this is Mario and Princess Peach's movie.
We recently learned that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently eyeing an Easter weekend debut of $85 million - $90 million from Wednesday through Sunday. All signs point to this one being a huge box office hit and we're sure that will lead to a sequel and even possible spin-offs.
From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to be released in theaters on April 7 April 5, 2023.
