A month's time ago, Halle Bailey was announced as the star of Disney's upcoming, live-action remake of
The Little Mermaid. Given that she isn't white, like Ariel typically is, there was some critcism of this casting decision. However, a survey found that
the majority of people are totally for the choice.
Variety recently did an interview with Bailey in which they brought up the negative reaction to the announcement that she'd be playing Ariel. The singer and actress revealed that she hasn't and doesn't intend to let the negativity get to her. Bailey simply sees the opportunity as an exciting endeavour and the role as something larger than herself.
"I feel like I'm dreaming, and I'm just grateful. And I don't pay attention to the negativity. I just feel like this role is something bigger than me, and greater, and it's going to be beautiful. I'm just so excited to be a part of it."
That's a good attitude to have. Back when her casting was announced, the upcoming remake's director, Rob Marshall made it clear that Bailey was the best choice for the role.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role."
