The
Sonic the Hedgehog movie arrived in theatres on February 14th — almost two weeks ago. Based on the popular video game series of the same name; Ben Schwartz stars as the voice of titular speedster alongside Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. The movie serves as Jeff Fowler's directorial debut.
The video game movie opened to an almost $60 million gross at the domestic box office and $110 million worldwide —
more on that here. This past weekend,
Sonic the Hedgehog managed to remain at the top spot on box office charts by earning $26.3 million domestically.
Thus far, the live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie has managed to make $107 million in the United States and Canada as well as $97 million elsewhere. That is to say that the new and popular video game movie has surpassed the $200 million feat — with precisely a $204 million gross overall (according to
Box Office Mojo; via
Gamefragger).
What makes this sum even more impressive is that the video game movie hasn't yet arrived in Japanese nor Chinese theatres. Those regions tend to amount a lot of money for movies but
Sonic the Hedgehog is managing to do really well without them. The movie will arrive in Japan next month and in China at a later date —

Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
