Disney shared a brief teaser for The Little Mermaid during last year's D23 Expo, giving us a glimpse of Ariel (Halle Bailey) swimming around her underwater kingdom as she belts out a few bars of "Part of Your World."
Now, thanks to some leaked Funko POP packaging, we have a first look at the character designs for several supporting players.
The POPs feature Ariel in human form, Prince Eric, King Triton and the villainous Ursula. For the most part, it looks like these guys will resemble their animated counterparts in the live-action remake.
We still don't know a whole lot about this take on the story, but based on what we've seen so far, director Rob Marshall won't be taking too many liberties with the animated classic it's based upon.
Bailey stars alongside Jonah-Hauer King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
The Little Mermaid will feature music from the animated classic as well as four new songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also compose original music for Mermaid along with Alan Menken.
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The movie is set to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.
