Dan Hernandez and Beni Samit, the writers for Warner Bros. and Legendary's
Detective Pikachu, were recently on the
Blank Check Podcast, where they revealed some very interesting details about the movie; specifically about the studio not wanting to adapt the Red/Blue story from the original Game Boy games.
According to the writers, the main reason why they adapted
Detective Pikachu, a spin-off game set in the world of
Pokémon, is because the studio felt like they didn't want to re-tell the story of Ash from the cartoon, or the story from the Red and Blue games, because they wanted this to be some sort of a reboot.
The writers also mentioned that making a live-action adaptation of
Detective Pikachu before adapting the original story from the games felt like starting using
Dr. Mario to start a
Super Mario Bros. live-action universe, or "
writing a Star Wars movie without a lightsaber, or the Force."
Thankfully,
Detective Pikachu is being very well received by fans and critics; calling it a must-see for fans of the Pokémon series, although criticising thst the movie plays it too safe at times.
The first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the iconic face of the global Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and most successful media franchises of all time.
Detective Pikachu is currently playing in theaters.
