It's been six years since the Angry Birds last took flight, but the film franchise is ready to take flight again. Paramount Pictures announced this week that The Angry Birds Movie 3 will be released in theaters worldwide on January 29, 2027.

The third film in the animated comedy film franchise will be produced by Rovio and SEGA alongside Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios and in partnership with Flywheel Media, One Cool Group, and detnsu. Paramount Pictures will be the distributor, taking over for Sony Pictures.

The Angry Birds Movie is an adaptation of Rovio Entertainment's Angry Birds franchise, which started as a mobile game first released in 2009. The premise of the game focuses on a flock of colorful, angry birds who try to save their eggs from green-colored pigs.

The first film followed Red, voiced by Jason Sudeikis, an outcast with a bit of a temper living on an island of anthropomorphic flightless birds. When a group of pigs led by Leonard (Josh Hader) arrive on the island, a suspicious Red, along with Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride), attempts to uncover and stop their evil plan. The movie received mixed reviews from critics but grossed $352 million worldwide.

In the sequel, The Angry Birds 2, the birds are forced to team up with the pigs to stop Eagle Island's leader from destroying both of their islands. While not as financially successful as its predecessor, the sequel did receive more positive reviews and grossed $152.8 million on just a $65 million budget.

Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso, Horrible Bosses), Josh Gad (Frozen, Beauty and the Beast), Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Trolls World Tour), and Danny McBride (The Righteous Gemstones, The Mitchells vs. the Machines) are all returning to reprise their roles as Red, Chuck, Silver and Bomb in the upcoming third movie. They are joined by new cast members Emma Myers (Wednesday, A Minecraft Movie), Keke Palmer (One of Them Days, Nope), Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson), Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver), Marcello Hernandez (Saturday Night Live), Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso, Veep), Anna Cathcart (XO Kitty), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever, Turning Red), Nikki Glaser (Golden Globe Awards, The Roast of Tom Brady), James Austin Johnson (Saturday Night Live), and Psalm West (The Kardashians).

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Paramount Pictures and extremely proud of our incredible cast,” said producer John Cohen. “Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Rachel and Danny returning to voice their fantastic characters, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re so thrilled to have them all on board.”

John Rice, director of the first film, is returning to the helm of The Angry Birds 3 with a screenplay by The Angry Birds 2 writer Thurop Van Orman. Rice is also executive producing alongside Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog).  John Cohen (Despicable Me, The Garfield Movie), Dan Chuba (The Mitchells vs. the Machines), and Carla Connor (The Willoughbys) are producers.

Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, The Minions Movie, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) is also returning to score The Angry Birds Movie 3. Pereira scored the first two movies as well.

DNEG Animation will handle storyboards, art development, and animation. A brief teaser trailer accompanied the announcement, highlighting the start of production.

“The Angry Birds brand has demonstrated remarkable versatility, evolving from a global mobile gaming phenomenon to licensed products, animation and a thriving cinematic franchise," said Rovio Entertainment CEO Alex Pelletier-Normand. "It has been a deeply collaborative effort to create a film that will resonate with the millions who interact with our catalog of games and products every day. We are confident that with this talented team at the helm, The Angry Birds Movie 3 will delight longtime fans and create new fans in those discovering our flock for the first time.”
