Following Stan Lee's tragic passing last month, fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing the Marvel Comics legend back on the big screen in Sony's
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, even if it will be via animation. Confirmation of Lee's cameo
first came last month, but now we have more details regarding the significance of his appearance in the film.
Deadline briefly details the scene but stops short of major spoilers. An animated version of Lee will appear as a New York merchant
"who offers some wry words of wisdom to Miles Morales (Shameik Moore)." According to the filmmakers, Lee's advice comes at a time when the super-powered youngster, taking over the responsibilities for an aged Peter Parker,
"is contemplating his destiny and duty."
“It was important to us that his character was important to the plot,” said Bob Perischetti, one of the film's three directors. “And we achieved that, his character has a key moment and gives Miles a talisman.”
Fellow director Rodney Rothman added that the scene has been incredibly emotional for preview audiences. “Watching it with an audience the other day and all the different emotions that they were giving off was just incredible," he said.
The legendary Lee has appeared in just about every major film pertaining to his beloved Marvel characters, including all five of Sony's live-action Spider-Man films. His cameos are typically short and humorous, but it sounds like Into the Spider-Verse will be providing us with something a little more meaningful. And it comes at an emotional time for his fans, many of which are still mourning his death.
