When this week began, none of us could have predicted that we'd get some of the worst news superhero fans could hear. Stan Lee, re-inventor of the comic book and co-creator of the Marvel universe, had passed on. It was a devesating blow to all of us, and the outpouring of memories and grief on social media spoke to Stan's legacy and impact on our culture and collective conscientiousness. We mourned the loss of an icon. But, Stan Lee's time in the spotlight is anything but over. Not only will his legacy live on as long as Marvel characters are on screen (which, let's face it, will be forever), Lee will still appear in several big-screen Marvel outings. One of those hits theaters in less than a month, in the highly-anticipated animated feature
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
In an article recently posted to
CinemaBlend,
Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller confirmed that Spider-Man's creator would appear in one of his now-famous cameos. Though the two didn't specify exactly where the cameo would appear, they did talk about just how fun it was to meet with Stan Lee. Via the article:
When we came in, we thought we were going to pitch him ideas, but he ended up pitching us no less than seven ideas in a 45-minute meeting. That's just the kind of guy he was --- an idea machine. He seemed to be a man to whom creation was as automatic as breathing. We were lucky to have him adorn our movie [Spider- Man: Into the Spider-Verse] with his voice [cameo].
Stan Lee's cameos usually center around some humorous interaction, so there's a lot of possibilities when it comes to into the Spider-verse. After all, lord and Miller are famous for their comedy, and from what we can tell from the Spider-Verse trailers, the movie will be loaded with jokes. A few of them are bound to be in Smilin' Stan's voice. And though it may break our hearts to hear him from beyond the veil, it will be some comfort to know that Stan's voice, and more importantly, his legacy, is still very much with us. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens on December 14th.
