Space Jam: A New Legacy recently released in theaters and on HBO Max. While it has been panned by critics, it seems that the general audience has enjoyed. For all of the film's flaws, Space Jam: A New Legacy has done fairly well at the box office, toppling Marvel's Black Widow.
Naturally, this has spurred the question as to whether or not Warner Bros. will greenlight a third installment in the franchise. And if they do, who will star in it?
Speaking to EW, A New Legacy director Malcom D. Lee didn't rule out a third film, acknowledging it would depend on audience response, a script and story, and even a potential new star.
"I never say never," Lee told EW when asked about the idea of a follow-up. "It's all going to be about whether the fans respond to this positively. But I think the bar has been set so high in terms of the first one with this global iconic superstar in Michael Jordan, and now the same global iconic superstar in LeBron James, who transcends sports. Who is that next person to put into that universe? And then you've got to find a script and story that's good enough to not repeat what's been done but will capture the spirit of it and keep it going."
As for who Lee would want to star in the film, the director said, "Dwayne Johnson would be an interesting choice."
"It would be different. I'm not exactly sure what his skillset would be, maybe he goes back to wrestling. That might be interesting," Lee added.
Prior to becoming a Hollywood star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was popularly referred to as "The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment." This, of course, was during his time in the wrestling ring as The Rock was a major star of the WWE.
Given his tremendous star power and his history in sports, Johnson would be an intriguing selection as the lead in a potential third Space Jam. Of course, the title would have the change along with the premise, but it could definitely make for an entertaining movie. Rather than take on a super-charged team of athletes on the basketball court, The Rock could round up the Looney Tunes for a royal rumble in the wrestling ring. That would certainly open things up for more hilarious acts and wild antics.
