Original Space Jam star Michael Jordan will appear in the upcoming reboot/reimagining, according to Space Jam: A New Legacy star Don Cheadle.
Speaking to Access, Cheadle was asked if the former star and NBA legend would appear in the film, to which he cryptically responded:
"[Michael] Jordan is in the movie, but not in the way you'd expect it."
Michael Jordan starred in the original 1996 live-action/animated sports comedy film. The Chicago Bulls star was recruited by the Looney Tunes to help lead the team and defeat the Monstars in a game of basketball.
Space Jam: A New Legacy changes things up a bit. Current NBA superstar and global phenom LeBron James is stepping into the lead role as he travels to the Warner Bros. Serververse to rescue his son. Cheadle, who plays an evil computer algorithm named Al-G Rhythm, challenges James to a game of basketball in order to escape.
Cheadle's comments have created quite a stir online as fans of the original film try and guess how Jordan will appear. Will the film simply make a passing reference to Jordan? Will he appear in CG or hand-drawn animation?
Make no mistake this is definitely LeBron James' film, but it will still be neat to see the basketball legend appear alongside him. What would be really cool is if they actually share some time on the court together. Jordan and James never played with or against each other in an NBA game, so doing so in Space Jam: A New Legacy could be a cool sight for basketball fans.
Space Jam: A New Legacy will release in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16.
