Ralph Breaks the Internet, the highly anticipated sequel to 2012's animated hit Wreck-It Ralph, is on track for an estimated $85.6 million box office debut. This five-day haul would make it the second-best Thanksgiving opening ever, behind only Disney's own Frozen, which brought it $93.5 million during the five-day extended holiday weekend.
Disney has found incredible success during the Thanksgiving weekend in the past. Behind Frozen and Ralph Breaks the Internet, Disney also holds the next three spots for best Thanksgiving weekend performers. Moana earned $82 million, while Toy Story 2 brought in $80.1 million. Rounding out the top five is last year's Coco, which earned $72.9 million.
Ralph Breaks the Internet is also tracking ahead of its predecessor with a projected $50.5 million three-day total. Wreck-It Ralph opened to $49 million over three days and finished with a global haul of $471.2 million ($189.4M domestically). Wreck-It Ralph was actually the previous highest opening ever before Disney one-upped itself with its own Frozen a year later. Frozen set the new bar with a $67.4 million three-day total while earning $93.9 million over the five-day holiday period.
Looking ahead, the records are almost certainly going to be broken again next year when Disney releases Frozen 2 on November 22, 2019.
“Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet—which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet—the netizens—to help navigate their way, including a webite entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site “BuzzzTube.”
Ralph Breaks the Internet is now playing in theaters.
