The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Coming to America star Eddie Murphy is being lined up to play the legendary Inspector Jacques Clouseau in MGM's upcoming Pink Panther remake.
Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler is set to direct the movie, while Bad Boys for Life scribe Chris Bremner is penning the screenplay.
This take on the classic property will be a live-action/CG hybrid, an arena Fowler is all too familiar with. The trade explains that, "The premise takes a buddy cop movie tone to the proceedings with the Inspector and Panther teaming up for the first time ever on the big-screen."
Before you get too excited, though, Pink Panther is still in the "deep development" stages, so it will be a while before cameras begin rolling. Fowler is currently busy working on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as well.
The Pink Panther franchise began in 1963 with a movie starring Peter Sellers as Clouseau. He reprised that role on a number of occasions, though Alan Arkin, Roger Moore, and Steve Martin have all put their spin on the character in the years since.
In the first movie, the bumbling French detective is on the hunt for the missing Pink Panther diamond, with the animated character we're all now so familiar with only appearing in the opening credits. Since then, the Panther has become a character in his own right and is downright iconic.
Murphy's most recent role was Netflix's You People. His past credits include the likes of The Nutty Professor and Shrek.
Stay tuned for updates on this one as we have them.
