Detective Pikachu features Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds as Tim Goodman and Detective Pikachu respectively. Tim begins the film declaring that he has no need for a Pokemon, but after saving the world along with his father, he seems all for the creatures. As a child, Tim dreamt of becoming a Pokemon trainer. Sadly, he grew away from that ambition.
However, with his love of Pokemon rekindled, perhaps Tim will become a Pokemon trainer after all. That's at least what Justice Smith hopes becomes of the character. Smith recently took part in an interview with
Comicbook.com wherein the actor was asked what he believes Tim has in store for him following the events of the film.
Smith explained that he'd like for Tim to follow in his father's footsteps by becoming a detective but also fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a Pokemon trainer. The actor cited the fact that when you encounter a trainer in the many Pokemon games, they are described as having an occupation on top of being a trainer of Pokemon.
Tim loved Pokemon as a kid and he wanted to be a Pokemon trainer, so I would love to see him one day become a trainer. Then again, he's following the family line of doing detective work. I want him to create this new breed of Pokemon trainers who are also detectives. You know how in the game, you go and see the gym trainers? Like fisherman Ike wants to battle you. Gymnast Misty wants to battle you. They all have occupations and they're also trainers! That's kind of what I want.
Synopsis: Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.
