Disney-Pixar's
Incredibles 2, the highly anticipated sequel to 2004's animated hit, is outperforming initial estimates and is now on pace for a record-breaking $182 million opening weekend at the domestic box office.
According to Variety,
Incredibles 2 earned a record-breaking $18.5 million in Thursday previews, followed by an estimated $71.5 million on Friday. The better-than-expected performance means the movie should surpass Disney's more conservative box office estimate of $160 million and $170 million. Regardless,
Incredibles 2 was always expected to beat out 2016's
Finding Dory to become the highest-grossing animated movie opening ever; the question now is by how much?
Should
Incredibles 2 stay on this pace and reach its now $180 million opening, it would now only beat out its fellow animated film, but several of Marvel and DC's superhero flicks. A $180 million opening would put it 8th on the list for best opening of all-time, ahead of
Captain America: Civil War ($179.1M),
Iron Man 3 ($174.1M),
Batman v. Superman ($166M),
Dark Knight Rises ($160.9M) and plenty more.
In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
Incredibles 2 is now in theaters.
