Daniel Kaluuya, best known for starring in Jordan Peele's seminal horror film Get Out and Ryan Coogler's Marvel Studios Academy Award-nominated Black Panther, is developing a live-action movie based on none other than Barney and Friends.
If you're unfamiliar, Barney and Friends is a children's television series that aired through the 90s up until 2010. The show features America's favorite purple dinosaur, the titular Barney, as he teaches a cast of children a plethora of songs, dances, games, and life lessons. Tangentially, it's even where such huge stars as Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato made their first appearances.
Nevertheless, while talking to Kaluuya about his upcoming film, Judas and the Black Messiah, Entertainment Weekly asked the actor for a status update on his and Mattel's Barney film. Kaluuya told them the following regarding the live-action film's premise.
"Barney taught us, ‘I love you, you love me. Won’t you say you love me too?’ That’s one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when that isn’t true? I thought that was really heartbreaking," Kaluuya said.
"I have no idea why but it feels like that makes sense. It feels like there’s something unexpected that can be poignant but optimistic. Especially at this time now, I think that’s really, really needed."
Naturally, many thought this was some elaborate joke at first but we can assure you that it is very real. It's clear that Kaluuya is being sincere.
