After appearing in several episodes in the first season of Marvel's What If...?, Captain Carter became a major focus of season 2.
There's no word yet on whether the next season of the Disney+ show will focus on Carter but if it does, Atwell has revealed where she hopes the show takes the UK super soldier.
"You take the fact that she loves what she does, and yet she still has this weight of responsibility in her shoulders. She will always love Steve, but she will be able to move past grief to have a deeper sense of purpose and who she is. And I think just that we can keep developing her based on what the audience love about her."
As far as what the future holds for Captain Carter, Atwell doesn't necessarily think her What If...? counterpart is destined to form her own Illuminati, similar to the version of the character that appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
"I think because of the nature of the incredible spider web of possibility and all these parallel worlds, I think there is a freedom there to not get necessarily too attached to one thread," Atwell told Comic Book, voicing her belief that an Illuminati membership is not an inevitable future for her What If...? character.
"I think she was also fulfilling a particular role in that moment in Doctor Strange, where it was quite much more somber. It was much more serious and earnest and the setup of the gag of going, 'I could do this all day,' and then immediately getting cut in half by a frisbee essentially is a fun, silly gag thing."
Marvel's What If...? season 3 is confirmed to be in development but there's currently no word on when it will be released.
Up next for Atwell is another voice role, portraying Lara Croft in Netflix's upcoming Tom Raider animated series.
The second season of What If....? currently has an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7.7/10 based on 22 reviews.
According to the site's consensus among reviewers, "What If...? may not add much to the larger MCU narrative, but surprising takes on beloved characters and some of the best action sequences in the entire franchise make for engaging viewing."
