Dreamworks Animation and its parent company, Universal Pictures, are working on an animated adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s bestselling children’s graphic novel series Dog Man.

Not to be confused with the 2023  Luc Besson's action drama film starring  Caleb Landry Jones, for many parents that are comic book enthusiasts, Pilkey's Dog Man series serves as a great, entertaining, and easy-to-read introduction into the world of comics, for kids.

Parents have praised the comic books starring Dog Man as humorous, action-packed, and full of adventure. The books have received recognition for their uplifting themes of morality, cooperation, and friendship.

Dreamworks Animation previously turned Pilkey's Captain Underpants series into an animated film and animated TV series. Peter Hastings, who helmed the animated Captain Underpants series, will direct Dog Man.

Dog Man is actually written as if it is the comic book creation of the two stars of Captain Underpants, George and Harold.

Per Amazon, an official synopsis for Volume 1 of Dog Man reads, "George and Harold have created a new breed of justice. With the head of a dog and the body of a human, this heroic hound digs into deception, claws after crooks, rolls over robbers, and scampers after squirrels. Will he be able to resist the call of the wild to answer the call of duty?"

"Dav Pilkey's wildly popular Dog Man series appeals to readers of all ages and explores universally positive themes, including empathy, kindness, persistence, and the importance of being true to one's self."

To date, there have been 11 entries released in the Dog Man series following the series' debut in 2016, with a 12th, Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder, set to drop in March. The series has been translated in over 40+ languages and has sold over 60 million copies, worldwide. The franchise also launched a spinoff series focused on Cat Kid in 2020.

Scholastic pointed to the release of the forthcoming Dog Man book as a reason for investors to feel bullish about the upcoming quarter.
