Mattel and Illumination are set to join forces for an animated film starring Barbie.

It seems the project is still in the early stages as there's no details on the plot or creative team involved.

This collaboration likely owes its creation to the success of 2023's live-action Barbie film, which starred Margot Robbie.

The film was a global sensation, earning over $1.4 billion and topping the year's box office. It also became Warner Bros.' highest-grossing film of all time.

Praised by critics, the film stood out for Greta Gerwig’s sharp direction, a clever and layered script, and standout performances from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Audiences and reviewers alike appreciated its mix of comedy and thoughtful commentary on gender roles and societal norms.

More than just a hit at the box office, Barbie made a major cultural impact, sparking conversations, dominating social media, and earning several major awards, including an Oscar for Best Original Song.

Illumination is a well-known animation studio behind some of the biggest family films in recent years, including the hugely popular Despicable Me series and its breakout stars, the Minions.

The studio has a strong track record of box office success with original hits like The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, as well as high-profile adaptations like Dr. Seuss's The Grinch and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

What sets Illumination apart is its focus on fun, lighthearted storytelling that appeals to all ages.

Their films often feature memorable characters, simple plots, and a strong sense of humor. Thanks to their global popularity, especially the massive impact of the Minions, Illumination has earned a top spot in the world of animation.

Following the massive success of Barbie, Mattel is moving full speed ahead with a slate of film adaptations based on its toy brands.

Among the most anticipated projects are a Hot Wheels movie produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Jon M. Chu, a Masters of the Universe live-action film scheduled for 2026, and a Polly Pocket movie starring Lily Collins.

Mattel’s ambitious lineup also includes a unique, adult-oriented Barney film with surrealist elements, along with planned adaptations of Matchbox, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, and UNO.

Illumination’s upcoming releases include two major sequels set to hit theaters in 2026. First is the follow-up to the blockbuster Super Mario Bros. Movie, arriving on April 3 in partnership with Nintendo.

Later that summer, Minions 3 will debut on July 1, continuing the wildly popular franchise that helped define the studio's success. Both films are expected to be major box office draws
