Encanto released in theaters last November for a shortened 30-day run, hauling in over $228 million worldwide while on its way to become the second highest-grossing animated film of 2021. While the pandemic likely hampered its box office performance, the computer animated fantasy musical found new life on Disney+ when it arrived towards the end of December.
Since then, the film has gone on to become a mega hit, with its soundtrack topping the US Billboard 200 and UK Compilation Albums charts. The song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" actually outperformed Frozen's "Let It Go," reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Given the film's critical acclaim and positive fan reception, we're now all wondering if Encanto will be getting a sequel. Disney hasn't officially annoucned anything, but composer and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda was asked about the possibility and it sounds like there is potential.
Appearing on Good Morning America, here's what Miranda had to say when asked if we'll be getting a sequel to Encanto.
“I’m thrilled that it’s resonating. There's so many characters there's a lot of stories we could tell inside that house so... ask the good folks at Disney."
Although sometimes criticized for sequels, Disney has not shied away from continuing to tell stories for its most popular films. In recent years, we've gotten sequels to Frozen, Cars, The Incredibles and more. And in situations where we don't get a full-fledged feature film, Disney now has the opportunity to continue its storytelling as a potential series on Disney+.
