Walt Disney World has announced that the reopening of its Polynesian Village Resort has been pushed back to summer 2021. In a statement sent to travel agents, Disney explained the extended closure "allows us to complete some refurbishment work at the Resort hotel, including enhancements to the Great Ceremonial House and Guest rooms."
A report from the Orlando Sentinel adds some more specifics, claiming a Disney spokesperson revealed the rooms will undergo renovation to include a "Pacific Ocean-inspired color palette as well as details, patterns and textures from Disney's Moana."
The 2016 computer animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios is a natural fit with the Polynesian Resort as it is partly set on the Polynesian island of Motunui. The film follows Moana, the strong-willed daughter of the village chief, who sets off on a journey to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. Moana sets sail in search of Maui, the legendary demigod, to assist her on her journey.
Earlier this year, the Polynesian Resort's restaurant, 'Ohana, had carpets installed that featured references to Moana, including imagery of Maui and the Heart of Te Fiti. It sounds like Disney is now looking to expand upon these references.
Disney's Polyneisan Village Resort has been closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. It's currently open with limited operations for Disney Vacation Club members staying at the Polynesian Villas and Bungalows.
