Disney's reboot of DuckTales will be ending next year. Collider associate editor Drew Taylor first reported that the beloved series had been done "for a little while now," but Disney only just confirmed with an official statement.
“The talented creative team, led by Matt Youngberg and Francisco Angones, have delivered exceptional storytelling with uniquely reimagined characters for three seasons of 75 episodes and more than 15 shorts. While physical production has wrapped, ‘DuckTales’ continues to be available on Disney Channels and Disney+ around the world and fans will get an epic season finale in 2021.”
It's unclear if Disney had canceled the series or if the showrunners had ended it on their own accord. Either way, a third season is still coming, which will bring the total to 75 episodes. As COllider notes, 65 episodes is usually the cut-off point for a Disney Channel original series as it allows the show to air every weekday for 13 weeks without repeating an episode.
The third season of the DuckTales reboot began airing in early 2020 with no warning or announcement that it would be the last. The most recent episode was the Christmas special, "How Santa Stole Christmas," which aired in November. The series will return for its last batch of episodes in 2021.
Inspired by the original series of the same name, the reboot from Matt Youngberg and Francisco Angones has been met with critical acclaim. The series has been nominated for numerous Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program, Outstanding Sound Editing for an Animated Program, Outstanding Editing for an Animated Program, and Outstanding Writing for an Animated Program.
More important than the awards, the series has been praised for its honoring of the original source material, including the easter eggs and references to other beloved Disney Afternoon specials. While it's sad that DuckTales is ending, there are reports that a Darkwing Duck spinoff is coming to Disney+. The fictional superhero character has appeared numerous times on DuckTales, perhaps as a lead up to his own series.
