Polygon Pictures, the studio that produced animation for the 3D CG series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is teaming up with Lucasfilm once again on the new 3D computer-animated series Star Wars: Resistance. Obviously, this announcement is great news for fans as The Clone Wars has been widely praised by both fans and critics alike, having won the Outstanding Special Class Animated Program category in the Daytime Emmy Awards two years in a row.
Given that Resistance is still early in production, not much is known about the anticipated series. However, we do know it will be set amongst the events leading up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will follow a young pilot, Kazuda Xiono, who is recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the First Order. Director Dave Filoni offered some comments on the concept of Resistance and its anime-inspired style.
"The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time."
Besides The Clone Wars, Polygon Pictures has also worked on GODZILLA: The Planet Eater, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, and many more projects. Fans can look forward to their newest collaboration with Lucasfilm when Star Wars: Resistance premieres this fall on Disney Channel in the United States and thereafter, on Disney XD and around the world.
On a somewhat related note, it was announced just last month at San Diego Comic-Con that Star Wars: The Clone Wars is being revived for a new 12-episode season premiering on Disney's streaming service in fall 2019. Polygon Pictures hasn't announced if they will be producing the revival as well.
