Despite being Cartoon Network’s flagship series on Adult Swim, there was some uncertainty regarding the future of
Rick and Morty due to contract difficulties. Well, good news for fans of the series, a deal has been struck that’ll see the hilarious science fiction comedy series continue for at least a few more season.
Series co-creator Justin Roiland took to Instagram to announced that 70 more episodes of
Rick and Morty are on the way. Should the series continue at its 10 episode per season rate, this means we’re in for at least 7 more seasons. Although, it’s worth noting that season 3 was originally supposed to be 14 episodes long, but was shortened to 10 because of the creators' “perfectionist” tendencies.
“I mostly blame myself for doing 10 instead of 14,” series co-creator Dan Harmon
told EW shortly after season 3 ended.
“I’m still learning how to do the show efficiently while catering to the perfectionist in all of us. I would like to think I’ve learned enough from my mistakes in season 3 that we could definitely do 14 now, but then I have to say, ‘Yeah but you’re the guy who says we can do 14 who turned out to be wrong so we’re not listening to you now.’"
Regardless of how many seasons the 70 episodes span, the fact is we’re definitely getting a lot more
Rick and Morty which is incredibly good news. It's also worth noting that with 31 episodes already out, another 70 would push the show to over 100 episodes, the magic number for syndication.
As for when we can expect the show, which is known for its notoriously long hiatuses between seasons, to return - well, writer Ryan Ridley recently told
The Detroit Cast that it could be quite some time.
"I know how long this show takes to write, let alone animate," he said. "I'd be surprised if there was a fourth season on the air anytime sooner than 2019... late 2019.” Time to start the countdown.
