The creators of Rick and Morty, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, recently confirmed Rick and Morty would indeed be getting a fourth season - and even more beyond that. The hit animated comedy went through doubt and tribulations during its renewal process but in the end was thankfully renewed for an enormous 70 episodes - this great amount seems to be what caused the delay.
GQ recently reported that Harmon and Roiland would only agree to the renewal if they were provided the necessary amount of time and money to handle to project properly.
Harmon and Roiland say they're holding out for a contract that grants them immortality. Or, if immortality is unavailable, at least ‘many, many, many more seasons,’ and enough money so that, as Roiland says, Harmon ‘doesn't have to take 12 other jobs while we're working on season four.'
Obviously, the negotiation were in fans' favour as Harmon and Roiland did indeed sign back on to oversee the Rick and Morty comeback. Before the deal was announced, Harmon told Kevin Smith during a podcast interview that the contract deal was a bit more complicated in the wake of the third season's unprecedented success.
There's no word on how many of these 70 episodes will be filtered into season four. With the negotiations only recently being settled and writer Ryan Ridley admitting that the fourth season will take quite a while to produce, "I know how long this show takes to write, let alone animate. I'd be surprised if there was a fourth season on the air anytime sooner than 2019... late 2019” Rick and Morty fans certainly have a long wait ahead of them - hopefully it's worth it!
