WHAT IF...?: The Absence Of Iron Man On The Season Finale Poster Will Have You Asking "Why Is Gamora?"

The first season of Marvel Studios' ambitious and groundbreaking animated series What If...? comes to an end this week with a finale that will hopefully answer more questions than it asks. While the title of Episode 9 is yet to be revealed (they usually release less than 24 hours before the episode), the poster for the final installment has spotlighted a new character yet to be introduced.

Gamora, who has had little to no involvement in the previous episodes and universes of What If...? is front and center on the new promo donning armor reminiscent of Saiyan garb from Dragon Ball Z.

Prior leaks and reports stated that this assassin variant of Gamora would be pitted against a version of Tony Stark who lands and builds armor on Sakaar. However, it was revealed that their episode was delayed to Season 2 due to the pandemic, slimming the first season down to nine installments.

This brings up two questions - where is Tony Stark, and why is Gamora? Okay, the second part is obviously a joke and reference to Drax's hilarious and infamous line in Avengers: Infinity War, but also, really, why is Gamora the one who survived their encounter?

Despite their episode being trimmed, a LEGO set was still released that features the Sakaaran armor Tony would have built in the delayed episode. With Tony heavily present in toy marketing, will Iron Man's absence be explained?

It has become a running joke that Tony Stark dies in every episode, with the writers of the series even referring to him as their version of South Park's Kenny. This has led to the theory that Tony's death could be an absolute point, but without the shell head present for the finale, that's unlikely to be explored. Still, with the Tony-centric episode being pushed to Season 2, it will be interesting to see how Gamora is brought into the fold by The Watcher and his ragtag team of multiversal misfits.

What do you guys think? Are you excited for Gamora to join the fray, or would you prefer some Tony Stark action? Regardless, be sure to share your take in the usual spot!

Enter the multiverse of unlimited possibilities.
