In the wake of the #MeToo movement; Family Guy producers Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin recently told revealed that, the hypersexual character of, Quagmire will have a light shone upon him next season.
Appel had this to say to Comicbook.com during the recent San Diego Comic-Con event:
The Me Too stuff became such a cultural force while we were writing for next season and we are taking it head on with Quagmire. Trying to be pretty fair about the whole character we’ve got, and [creator Seth MacFarlane] completely encouraged us to do that. In fact I think he took a specific interest in this episode.
While the previous season of the animated comedy series briefly dealt with Quagmire's sexual prowess being taken away - his penis being literally bitten off by a shark, for a short while - this time around it seems to be going much more in depth.
With characters like Apu from, similar animated comedy series, The Simpsons being under fire for being unsafe for the modern era, it appears that Family Guy's showrunners want to tackle one of their risky characters before the issue even arises.
MacFarlane, the show's creator, has spoken out against alleged sexual abusers such as Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey - the later even becoming a punchline within the cartoon series - it seems apt that the show would continue to wade within that water.
Sulkin went on to add:
I think the key to that is just number of jokes times volume of shows. We tend to talk about a lot of different subjects, and it's bound to happen that it will line up somehow at some point. And I feel like now, with the sort of Trump era and the Me Too movement and all that kind of stuff, we just have a few extra prongs that are lining up at the right time.
What do you think about Appel and Sulkin's comments? Do you think Quagmire's hypersexuality needs to be dealt with?
Family Guy's 17th season will debut on September 30th
