POWERPUFF GIRLS Live-Action CW Series Loses Blossom Actor Chloe Bennet Amidst Production Issues

The live-action Powerpuff Girls adaptation has hit many snags before making it to The CW, and now Blossom actress Chloe Bennet has thrown a bigger wrench in the project by dropping out before re-shoots.

If there's a weird live-action adaptation, you can bet The CW will find a place for it. Examples include the Superman prequel series Smallville which preceded the height of superhero series fandom and Riverdale, an adaptation of the Archie comics.

That's not even mentioning the short-lived Birds of Prey series from the 90s or iZombie, a show that is literally about the main character eating brains. Even strange Arrowverse projects like Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning have found their home on The CW when it would have been hard to elsewhere.

All of these are examples of why it is no surprise that the station has been developing a live-action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls. Lazily titled Powerpuff, the show has inspired more head-scratching than celebration. Production on the series has been so troubled that the pilot has been completely re-worked with re-shoots immediately scheduled, which has inadvertently led to an even bigger issue - the loss of their lead actress.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Chloe Bennet was chosen to lead the cast as Blossom, but she has now been forced to leave the project ahead of re-shoots. The official announcement from Variety states that Warner Bros was looking to extend the contract with Bennet though a scheduling conflict has caused her to drop out entirely.

The real question is whether or not Bennet smelled smoke and ran before the garbage fire of a series this looks to be - if it ever gets off the ground at all. Her Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-star Dove Cameron is still attached to play Bubbles for the time being, so it's possible that Bennet really was forced to quit due to a scheduling conflict - whether that be for Secret Invasion or something else entirely.

There is currently no premiere date set for the floundering Powerpuff pilot.
