When What If...?'s Captain Carter returned to Earth-82111 after fighting Infinity Ultron alongside her fellow Guardians of the Multiverse, the hero discovered Steve Rogers' HYDRA Stomper armour.
At the time, we assumed a long-awaited happy reunion with her old flame was planned. However, a sizzle reel shown at last year's San Diego Comic-Con confirmed that, while Steve is indeed alive and inside the suit, the animated series will put a new spin on Captain America: The Winter Soldier in season 2.
The episode, expected to be titled "What if...Captain Carter Fought the HYDRA Stomper?" will reveal that the war hero ended up falling under HYDRA's control the same way his old pal, Bucky Barnes, did on Earth-616.
We don't know whether that means Steve is going to call himself the "Winter Soldier," but the hero is clearly going to take on a similar role in this reality.
What If...?'s first season ended with a glimpse at the new HYDRA Stomper, but after a low-res shot previously found its way online, we have some official product images of Steve's new look courtesy of a new wave of Marvel Legends action figures.
The swappable head sculpt does bear a solid resemblance to Chris Evans' animated counterpart, though it was Josh Keaton who lent his voice to the character in this series. As for the suit itself, it's very Iron Monger-esque and should pose a suitable challenge to Captain Carter.
With any luck, Steve will eventually regain his senses and these two will get their happily ever after! The clash should be an emotional one and we're excited to spend more time with the good Captain after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' so quickly killed her live-action Variant.
Despite recent rumours about What If...? season 2 debuting later this year, 2024 now looks more likely. It's also been reported that the series will only run for a total of three seasons during the Multiverse Saga.
