When Captain Carter returned to her own reality at the end of What If...?'s first season, she discovered Steve Rogers' HYDRA Stomper armour.
It appeared to be a happy ending on the surface, but a sizzle reel shown at last year's San Diego Comic-Con confirmed that, while her old flame is indeed alive and inside the suit, the plan is for the animated series to put a new spin on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Black Widow in season 2.
The episode, expected to be titled "What if...Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?" will reveal that Steve ended up falling under HYDRA's control the same way his old pal, Bucky Barnes, did on Earth-616.
We don't know whether that means Steve is the new "Winter Soldier," but it's a role the hero is clearly going to fulfil on Earth-82111.
Now, a first look at his updated armour has been revealed as part of a Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure. Given an overhaul for the 21st Century, he looks more like Iron Man's Iron Monger and should prove to be a formidable foe when he and Peggy inevitably come to blows.
With any luck, Steve will eventually regain his senses and these two will get their happily ever after!
Despite it once looking like What If...? season 2 would debut in 2023, 2024 now looks more likely (some online scoopers have gone so far as to suggest it might be pushed as far back as 2025). It's also been reported that the series will only run for a total of three seasons during the Multiverse Saga.
