Springfield is getting dark today. The Simpsons dropped its newest Disney+ exclusive special, Yellow Mirror, this morning, August 26th, per TVLine. As the title promises, this one is a full-on Black Mirror parody, trading couch gags for tech paranoia.
The special is an anthology in the Black Mirror mold, billed as two twisted tales of the curious and bizarre. In the first, a defective lamp forces Homer to confront a heartbreaking truth about what he believes is reality. The second sees an AI-powered tablet befriend baby Maggie, and the friendship takes a controlling turn.
Homer versus a lamp might be the most evenly matched fight in the show's history!
Patti Harrison, the comedy favorite from I Think You Should Leave, and Demi Moore both guest star, with their roles still under wraps. Landing Moore, fresh off her Oscar-nominated turn in The Substance, for a tech-horror sendup is a fun bit of casting all by itself.
The special was written by Carolyn Omine and Kai Omine, directed by Matthew Faughnan, with Matt Selman serving as showrunner and Omine as co-showrunner.
Yellow Mirror is the sixth Simpsons episode made exclusively for Disney+, following O C'mon All Ye Faithful, The Past and the Furious, Yellow Planet, Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition, and Simpsley. It's also the third exclusive this summer alone, so the streamer clearly likes how these specials are performing.
Disney+ spent its first few years testing the waters with Simpsons crossover shorts like The Good, the Bart, and the Loki, Maggie Simpson in The Force Awakens from Its Nap, and When Billie Met Lisa, and the experiment clearly worked: the shorts grew into full-length exclusive episodes. Those episodes are now arriving at with their own release calendar.
Disney+ has turned into the family's second home. The service launched a 24/7 Simpsons stream carrying every season, The Simpsons Movie 2 is officially on the calendar for 2027, and Fox has the flagship series renewed all the way through Season 40.
That flagship animated series remains the longest-running scripted primetime series in American television history, with an episode count closing in on 800, with every one of them living on the streaming service.
With specials, the stream, and a theatrical sequel, the franchise is busier in its late thirties than most shows are at 3! Not bad for a series that premiered back in December 1989!
Longtime fans know the show does some of its best work in anthology mode. It can be traced all the way back to 1990, when Season 2 introduced the first Treehouse of Horror, and those Halloween episodes have spoofed everything from The Shining to The Twilight Zone across three decades, including the all-time classic Shinning segment.
Black Mirror is ripe territory for the same treatment. Charlie Brooker's anthology has been skewering our relationship with technology since 2011, seven seasons and a shelf of Emmys ago, which hands the parody fifteen years of tropes to raid. The two-tale structure even mirrors how Brooker's show works: tight standalone stories where the tech is the monster. A whole special in that register, with the town's least tech-savvy man at the center, writes its own jokes.
You can stream Yellow Mirror on Disney+ right now, alongside the five earlier exclusives if you need to catch up. All of them live under the show's hub on the service, and the 24/7 stream is one tab over if the special sends you down a nostalgia rabbit hole. If this one hits, it's hard to imagine the streamer stopping at six.
