Prime Video has ordered an animated series based on Seth Rogen's adult-oriented comedy Sausage Party. The upcoming series, titled Sausage Party: Foodtopia, is set to premiere exclusively on the streaming service in 2024.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, it probably won't veer too far from the original film's concept which followed the adventures (and sexual desires) of sentient grocery store items. In the original film, the characters uncovered the truth of "The Great Beyond" outside their grocery store home and rebelled against the humans who buy and sell them, culminating in a lovingly graphic orgy scene that that either had you bellowing with laughter or squeaming in uneasiness.
Sausage Party was shockingly adored by critics and officially certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The film scored an 82% with the critical consensus praising its offensive but enthusiastic profanity, salacious gag humor, and "surprisingly thought-provoking storyline."
"Film used to be the superior art form to television, and we humbly reached the pinnacle of what can be achieved with film in our remarkable opus, Sausage Party. But now that film is completely dead and TV is the forever-king of entertainment, we’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It’s got all the heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food sex. In other words, it’s exactly what the world needs right now,” said Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in a joint statement accompanying Prime Video's announcement.
Many of the original cast members will be returning for the series including Seth Rogen as Frank, the sausage who set out to expose what was beyond the "Great Beyond"; Kristen Wiig as Brenda, a hot dog bun and Frank's love interest; Michael Cera as Barry, a deformed sausage and one of Frank's friends; David Krumholtz as Kareem Abdul Lavash, a Middle Eastern lavash; and Edward Norton as Sammy Bagel Jr., a neurotic Jewish bagel. Joining them are newcomers Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia is executive produced by Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, who also serve as showrunners. Shaffir and Hunter also co-wrote the 2016 film with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Conrad Vernon, who co-directed the feature film, will return as supervising director for the series and will also executive produce alongside Annapurna Television’s Megan Ellison and Patrick Chu, and Andrew Millstein. Sausage Party: Foodtopia is a co-production of Annapurna Television, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon Studios.
“The original film was another irreverent comedy from the brilliant comedic minds of Seth and Evan. When Annapurna, Seth and Evan approached us to wholly reboot the project as a TV series we were thrilled to be a part of the collaboration and equally excited to have Prime Video as our partner,” added Sony Co-President Jason Clodfelter. “We look forward to the fanfare around Sausage Party: Foodtopia which promises to be a hit.”
I went into the original film with zero prior exposure to what it would be about and came out of the theaters thinking it was one of the funniest and most original comedies I'd seen in a long time. The final orgy remains one of the most shocking and hilarious scenes in cinema history for me, although I'd be remiss not to mention the equally hilarious and graphic (for much different reasons) kitchen massacre scene. If Disney's Bob Chapek believes adults aren't interested in watching animated movies, he probably hasn't seen Sausage Party.
