Not only is The Smurfs making a return, but the series is also headed to Nickelodeon for the first time. A new CG-animated adaptation of the show will premiere in less than a month, bringing Papa Smurf, Brainy, Smurfette, Gargamel, and the rest of the characters to a whole new generation of fans.
Unlike some of the reboots that are currently in development under different names like The Flinstones continuation under the title Bedrock and the live-action Powerpuff Girls simple titled Powerpuff, the new Nickelodeon series is choosing what is probably their best option and going with the same name.
Simply titled The Smurfs, the brand new CG-animated adventures will land on Nickelodeon in September with fresh episodes airing every Friday night. The number one network for kids made the announcement today along with a trailer that previews the antics to come.
The trailer makes it clear that although audiences may have spent 40 years in their absence, the protagonists of The Smurfs haven't changed one bit. With antics and jokes reminiscent of the original series and the new show retaining the famous title, this looks like it should appeal not only to a new and younger generation, but it should also feed the nostalgic beast within older fans as well.
We've included the trailer, synopsis, and release date below, so check it out for yourself and make sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot!
