Seth Rogen announced today the release date of his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, and it looks like fans will have to wait a while before seeing the Heroes in a Half-Shell return to the big screen. In a post on social media, Rogen announced the CG-animated film will hit theaters on August 11, 2023, so we've got quite a while.
Rogen, who is producing the film, shared the date alongside some humorous doodles that look as if you were reading Leonardo's notebook from science class. Rogen mentions that "Leo takes notes like I used to," but aside from a few jokes about Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello, there doesn't appear to be anything of major interest hidden in the drawings -- aside from the film's release date. There is mention of April O'Neil, which suggests she'll also be featured in the movie.
Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation Studio are helping create the movie alongside Point Grey Pictures, a production company run by Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. The film will be directed by Jeff Rowe (Disenchantment, The Mitchells vs. the Machines) with a screenplay penned by Brendan O'Brien (Neighbors).
Plot details for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remain under wraps, but Rogen previously told Collider that the film will use the "teenage" part of the title as the "jumping off point for the film."
"As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the 'Teenage' part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most. And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us. I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as kind of a jumping off point for the film."
Rogen's film is actually the second animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie coming our way. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, which is based on the 2018 animated series of the same name, is coming to Netflix later this year.
