The upcoming live-action
Detective Pikachu movie has been given fans of the beloved Pokémon series a lot to talk about, especially after the movie's second trailer; which seems to have blown everyone's minds, regardless if they're fans of the
Pokémon series or not.
In a recent interview with
Vulture,
Detective Pikachu actor Justice Smith reveals that the movie has been completely shot in film instead of digitally, as this gives the movie a vibe more akin to the urban noir aesthetic the director wanted to give
Detective Pikachu.
When asked about the use of CGI characters and green screens, Smith says that green screen wasn't used as much as one may think, mainly because the director wanted to shoot in location — while also revealing about the movie being shot in film.
"
There wasn’t a lot of green screen. Our director, Rob Letterman — I’m getting better at saying last names, Rob Letterman — wanted to shoot on location as much as possible. We shot in London, and for like a week in Scotland which is like a desktop background. He had this vision to put the Pokémon up against this urban backdrop and use this gray, grainy filter. We shot on film so it gave it that natural grain."
Warner Bros. and Legendary seem to have done a wonderful job with the movie, as it looks and feels like it will be a game changer for the video game movie curse; perhaps even becoming the very first video game movie to not be destroyed by critics and audiences.
Based on the 2016 Detective Pikachu video game, the Rob Letterman directed Detective Pikachu movie is boasting the talents of Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, and Ken Watanabe — among others — and will hit theaters on the 10th of May.
The first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the iconic face of the global Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and most successful media franchises of all time.
Detective Pikachu will release in theatres on the 10th of May in 2019.
