Toy Story 4's second-biggest preview night for an animated film had industry analysts estimating the film could reach as high as $200 million in its opening weekend. Those expectations were tempered a bit after the film delivered just $47.3 million on its opening night (including the Thursday previews). With Friday's tally,
Toy Story 4 is now projected to bring in around $123.7 million for its opening weekend, well below the initial estimates of $140 to $200 million.
This may not have been the record-breaking opening that many had hoped for following glowing reviews and white-hot buzz, but it's still a solid opening.
Toy Story 4's opening numbers would put it third on the list for best opening weekened for an animated film, behind only
Finding Dory ($135M) and
Incredibles 2 ($182.6M). Those films opened to $56 million and $71 million, respectively, so
Toy Story 4 is clearly trailing.
Whlie it's jarring to see a Pixar film not exceed or even meet analyst estimates,
Toy Story 4 is doing just fine. In pacing with Pixar's top two films, there's a good chance the film could top $400 million domestically and even join the $1 billion club at the worldwide box office.
Deadline
reports that
Toy Story 4 added an additional $38.3 million overseas and is looking at a $110 million-plus opening weekend at the international box office. This is actually slightly above industry projections.
