When
Toy Story 4 was revealed to be in the works, many were taken aback as they believed that the third instalment was simply the perfect way to bring the story of Andy's toys to a close. However, the fourth instalment debuted in theatres back in July and managed to satisfy audiences nonetheless.
With the animated film's home release right around the corner, Josh Cooley, the director of
Toy Story 4 recently participated in an interview with
Comicbook.com wherein he discussed how the fourth film was necessary to complete Woody's character arc.
Cooley begins by praising the ending of
Toy Story 3 and saying that it only partially brought Woody's arc to a close.
Toy Story 3 sees Woody part ways with Andy, but there's more to his character than just being Andy's toy — according to the director.
"Well, I think that the end of 3, which I love, and first did not see a fourth film, but it's the end of Woody's arc with Andy," Cooley explained.
It's the completion of his being able to let go of Andy, but there is more to Woody. He's been such a loyal toy, like so good to the point where he had blinders on, and so this was like, can we show him that everything that he has feared for entire quadrilogy is actually, Bo is that. Bo has become that lost toy that he was freaking out about in the first film and now he's able to open his eyes and go like, 'Wow, there is a bigger world out there. I can basically go from taking care of one kid in a bedroom to taking care of multiple kids everywhere.' So that felt like a big change and a completion of his arc.
This is a particularly interesting statement when taking into account what we recently found out about
Toy Story 4 — that being that its ending was almost absolutely and entirely different —
