The Simpsons is currently in the midst of its 34th season, making the show easily the longest-running American scripted TV series ever made. While there are those who feel it has lost its charm in recent years, The Simpsons remains an iconic property and one that continues to be appointment viewing for many on a weekly basis.

Throw in the fact it's a huge part of Disney+, and we expect the House of Mouse to remain committed to the franchise for a very long time to come.

Looking to the past, though, and there are heaps of moments in The Simpsons that continue to stir debate and generate discussion among fans.

One of them is a random, though undeniably hilarious, line from a season 8 episode titled "The Mysterious Voyage Of Our Homer." That saw Bart and Lisa discuss a character called "Mabel" who has since been the subject of great scrutiny despite not being mentioned again since.

Now, former writer and showrunner Josh Weinstein has finally explained what the deal is with this mystery character.

The episode followed Homer Simpson as he embarked on a hallucinogenic journey, leaving little room for a subplot revolving around Bart and Lisa.

As a result, the Mabel line was simply a fun way to make it appear as if the brother and sister had something big going on even if we weren't getting to see it. This will, of course, debunk a lot of popular fan theories, but proves that it's occasionally best not too read too much between the lines!

What are your thoughts on this big "mystery" from The Simpsons finally being explained?
