Ever since Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation, fans have been very vocal about the beloved character's redesign; complaining, with good reason, that
Sonic looks absolutely nothing like any of his iterations from the video games.
Just recently, we found out that Yuji Naka — the original programmer for the first
Sonic the Hedgehog video game — wanted to make an appearance in the movie, while also revealing that he liked Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik and is open to give the movie a chance.
Naoto Ohshima, the artist who designed
Sonic before the character was even given a name, has recently taken to Twitter to express that he's disappointed with what Paramount Pictures has done with
Sonic in terms of the design. Ohshima mentions that he wants to love
Sonic but is worried that the movie is only focusing on making money and not doing the character justice.
Ohshima has also drawn the new
Sonic in his characteristic art style, and the character looks a lot better that way; there's something about the eyes and mouth that the movie just couldn't get right but it seems to translate well when drawn.
Hopefully Paramount Pictures takes notes and decide to do something about
Sonic's new look, especially sicne there's still time to change some things about the design before the movie comes out. From what we could see in the trailer, the movie does not look like it will be a disaster but, if they can't get the character's look right, they've already lost half the battle.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theaters on the 7th of November.
