THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART Underperforming At The Box Office Was Puzzling, Warner Bros. CEO Admits

Kevin Tsujihara, the CEO of Warner Bros., recently admitted that The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part's performance at the Box Office was puzzling.
The opening weekend of the long-awaited sequel was expected to rake in $55 million, which would put it just behind its predecessor (which made $69 million). However, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part fell well short of that with only a $34 million opening weekend. Currently, it's made a total of $137 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo) which shockingly puts it behind even The LEGO Batman Movie's domestic score.
The first instalment was a massive success and the brand seemed quite reliable; Hence why Tsujihara finds the underperformance so confusing. "It didn’t do as well as tracking would’ve suggested, which was a little puzzling. The first movie was so fresh and so different," the Warner Bros. head told LA Times before assuring the strength of the brand, particularly on the video-game side:
"We need to continually rethink the experience, but the Lego brand is incredibly strong. On the game side, it’s been an incredible franchise. We acquired [Lego video game maker] TT Games 12 years ago, and it really was a cornerstone of everything we’ve done in games."
Though The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part proved to be a critical success, the financial underperformance left many fans worried that a third instalment may never see the light of day. Its fate is certainly uncertain. Though, airing on the side of optimism, Tsujihara at least still believes in the brand. We'll just have to keep our finger crossed for now.
