The Incredibles 2 writer-director, Brad Bird, didn't allow three-point landings (otherwise known as "superhero landings") in the film.
Story supervisor Ted Mathot told Screen Crush, “You see it in everything, and Brad was like ‘I do not want to see any three-point landings!’”
The behind-the-scenes ban was “kind of a joke,” Mathot explained, but one that the filmmakers kept in mind nonetheless. “When we’d draw something, we’d have to come up with some other way for them to land.”
The trope was made obvious by the R-rated Marvel film Deadpool in which the merc with a mouth makes fun of super-strong supervillain Angel Dust for her overly dramatic "superhero landing." When Angel Dust makes the landing, with her fist and knee pressed into the earth, Deadpool cheers, “Whoo! Superhero landing!” before pointing out to the audience, “You know, that’s really hard on your knees. Totally impractical, they all do it.”
The three-point landing has flourished in everything from Iron Man to Black Panther and Blade to Spider-Man 2, but it is not something you'll be seeing in a Brad Bird-directed film anytime soon.
What do you think about the trope's absence? Are you a fan of "superhero landings"?
In The Incredibles 2, Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
