One of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem's biggest selling points has become the fact the animated reboot will feature actual teens playing the lead characters.
Despite boasting a young core cast, there are heaps of A-Listers filling out the rest of this ensemble, and Paramount Pictures clearly have high hopes about the movie relaunching the franchise after Michael Bay's underwhelming live-action efforts. However, that means creating a whole new lore for this take on the iconic franchise.
Talking to Total Film, writer/director Jeff Rowe confirmed Mutant Mayhem features its own take on that in an effort to "make it more logical."
"There were a lot of things that were skated past, and we took a lot of time to make it really operate from a place of character and relatability that, I think, will be shockingly emotional," the filmmaker continued. "The goal early on in our conversations with [co-writer] Seth [Rogen] were: 'We want people to leave the theatre, and be like, 'I can't believe I just cried at a Ninja Turtles movie.'"
A new approach makes sense, especially when Mutant Mayhem will introduce many younger moviegoers to the four Heroes in a Half Shell for the first time. Some longtime fans might take issue with some of the inevitable changes, but that's par for the course with any reboot.
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts.
Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is set to be released in theaters on August 4.
