Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuted in theatres back in December 2018 and was an incredible success both financially and even more so critically.
The animated movie holds an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and even earned the Academy Award for "Best Animated Feature Film." Marvel Comics characters such as Miles Morales were instantly flung into stardom and became household names.
Not long after all of the initial success, Sony Pictures Animation announced that a sequel is in the works. What's more, it was reported that a spinoff about Spider-Gwen, Hailee Steinfeld's character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was also being developed.
We got an update on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel just a couple of weeks back — that being that the movie's release had been delayed to October 8th, 2022 — but what about the spinoff? Well, Steinfeld recently provided Entertainment Tonight with an update.
Asked whether there are any talks going on at the moment in regards to the Spider-Gwen spinoff, Steinfeld said: "Not that I know of, I am not in the know with these things."
The actress/singer continued: "It's funny because I feel like [during lockdown] is the time to figure it out. But I do think, obviously, everything has kind of been slightly put on hold. So there hasn't been much that I've heard lately." So it seems development is at a standstill or Steinfeld just simply isn't in the know at the moment.
It's believed that the Spider-Gwen spinoff would essentially be all-female and introduce such other female Spider-Man characters as Madame Web and a plethora of other webslingers that are more along the lined of Gwen Stacy such as Spider-Girl, Spider-Woman, and Cindy Moon, a.k.a. the web-slinging Silk.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set to arrive in theatres on October 8th, 2022.
