Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse features a subtle nod to Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) who may have played a significant part in Miles' creation. Fandango recently sat down with producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord to discuss the animated film. Fandango outright asked, "Is there a quick shot of Donald Glover in one scene when Miles [Morales] visits his uncle’s apartment?"
"It sure looks like him," Lord and Miller played coy, stating that they're not certain that they're "legally allowed to say." Lord did go on to mention that Community formed a "groundswell of support" for a "Spider-Man of color."
During the second season of Community, Glover's character donned a Spidey outfit and since then many had pushed for him to don the mantle in full. Soon after that occurence, Miles was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli.
It's believed that they were wholly influenced by Glover donning the outfit. Therefore, without Glover, there would be no Miles. The actor also briefly featured in the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming as Miles' uncle.
Lord stated, "we just thought it was a neat little nod." Miller then added, "It may or may not actually be in the movie. You have to watch to find out…"
What do you think of the producers' comments? Did you catch the cameo?
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse swings into theatres on December 21st.
