Scooby-Doo was released in 2002 and starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred Jones, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake, and Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley. With a script from James Gunn, the live-action take on the classic cartoon has become something of a cult classic, as has Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (to a lesser extent).
The latter flopped at the box office, though, and a planned third movie never became a reality.
In recent years, Gunn - who is busy finishing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and prepping to helm Superman: Legacy as DC Studios co-CEO - has expressed interest in making an R-Rated Scooby Doo 3. However, Prinze has no interest in being part of any sort of Scooby-Doo threequel.
"I have zero interest, it was tricky," the actor said, reflecting on the poor experience of making those movies. "It wouldn't be for me, man. There was too much bait-and-switch on the first one. The studio was not honest with me in any way, shape or form. They were not straightforward."
"I've been on two jobs where I've had regret doing it, and Scooby was one of them."
Despite that, Prinze does appreciate the impact those movies had on younger fans and their lasting impact.
"All of a sudden, I was like, 'Hey man, we did good. There are legit millions of people who love this movie. It's not the movie I wanted to make, but I appreciate that,'" Prinze added. "And it made me change my outlook on it."
As much fun as a revival could be, it's not a movie we ever anticipate becoming a reality, no matter how Prinze feels about his time as Fred.
Scooby-Doo lives on, of course, though the latest animated Scoob! franchise was scrapped by Warner Bros. Discovery as part of cost-cutting measures despite the sequel being almost finished. HBO Max's Velma, meanwhile, has divided fans but a second season is still set to be released sometime later this year.
Would you head to theaters to watch Scooby-Doo 3 if it ever happened?
